Stories Behind the Songs

Just Breathe - Mark’s Story Words and Music by Mark Wisehart © 2012 ASCAP

I had written a poem several years ago after a pretty long winter. I was out one day just before spring when a warm wind blew on my face and I knew winter was finally about to break. When Rachel asked me to write 'Breathe', I thought back to that poem and related it to how long time can seem, especially when you've lost a pet and miss them terribly. I wanted to move beyond this life and try to help people see that there is the possibility that one day we may be reunited with our pet and if we could, how cool it would be to be able to have a conversation with them?

You’ll Always be our Baby – Rachel’s Story Words and Music by Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

This was the first song I wrote for our sweet dog Daisy. It was for a dog food commercial that we were to send in and get a year’s worth of dog food. That would have been a blessing. I thought for SURE we’d get it, but alas, we didn’t. But we still sang the song to her anyways whenever we could. When we compiled this CD, it was a little painful to keep the title “You’ll Always be our Daisy”, so we thought we would include everyone else who listened to the CD so they could insert THEIR doggie’s name into it by titling it “You’ll Always be our Baby”. I hope this song will help you remember what joy and comfort you received from your “baby”.

The Soul is Here – Cathy’s Story Words and Music by Catherine Hendrickson & Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

I have been in the animal medical field for over 20 years. Many of those years have involved picking up animal family members that have passed away in order to take them to be cremated and then return the ashes to the family. One of the most powerful experiences I have ever had is when I return the ashes of the beloved pet to the family and see the confused, anguished look in their eyes that seems to say, “This is all there is left of my loved one?” In my compassion, I try to console them and remind them, “The soul is here,” putting my hand over my heart. It is all I can do to get back into my truck and drive away. I have never been able to express this in words until I told Rachel Harvey about it. Rachel has put into song the cry of my heart to all the friends that I have returned their loved ones to, and not known how to console them. I hope this song will speak to your hearts and give you at least some measure of comfort in your loss.

At the Rainbow Bridge – Rachel’s Story Words and Music by Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

When our Daisy passed away, my father-in-law forwarded me the “Rainbow Bridge” Story. It was such a sweet story and it brought hope to my heart that God’s Grace and Mercy COULD go deep enough to allow us to meet our pets in heaven. Once we decided to do this project, it was just a “given” that this story should somehow be made into a song…so I tried to keep the original thought and spirit of the song, while adding the rest of my own in order to create the setting of the Rainbow Bridge. I hope it will be a comfort to you as it has become a comfort to me.

Animals in my Mansion – Rachel’s Story Words and Music by Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

After Daisy passed away, I wanted to write something special for my children in memory of her. Of course, their sorrow was SO deep since Daisy was the first animal they had ever owned, so obviously, I wanted to add a little bit of comic relief to keep them from plunging down into the depths of despair. I also wanted them to see and hopefully understand that after all the years of losing all the pets I had, they would one day be able to look back and smile about Daisy and all the lovely times they had instead of always thinking of her with tears. It also helped me move through the grief that I not only had for the loss of my sweet, perfect Daisy, but all the other animals that I had lost since I was a little girl.

Time to Say Goodbye - Rachel and Cathy’s Story Words and Music by Catherine Hendrickson & Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

As Cathy and I sat down and discussed some thoughts about this project, she mentioned that we should write a song called “It’s Time to Say Goodbye”, since sometimes people prolong their grief by trying to hold on so tightly that their sweet little loved one does not feel the freedom to let go either and continues to suffer. My mother always told me from childhood that dying is as much a part of life that living is, and we need to understand this…and that it’s okay to let go and say good-bye.

Heaven’s Lonely Without You - Mark’s Story Words and Music by Mark Wisehart © 2006 ASCAP

I was at a period of time where I was tired of the same old one dimensional songs. I wanted to write something that transcended this world and took a peek into the next. I wrote this song to comfort family who were trying to make sense of a loved one dying. After sharing it with my wife, her immediate reaction was 'I see someone being reunited with their pet!'. I was nearly offended... had my sister Rachel not said the exact same thing when I played it for her! The rest is history.

Heartbroken - Rachel’s Story Words and Music by Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

I was sitting thinking of titles of songs that might be appropriate to appear on this project. I started thinking how heartbroken some people are when they lost a pet. Almost heartbroken enough to take their own lives because that pet meant so much to them. But I didn’t want to take them into the deepest, darkest part of their grief, so with the little twist this song brings, I hope that in the heartbrokenness that one has for the loss of their loved one, they can find a way to dance.

Because of Valor - Rachel and Cathy’s Story Words and Music by Rachel Harvey © 2012 ASCAP

In more discussions that Cathy and I were having, she mentioned Valor, a local K-9 police dog, and how neat it would be to have a song recognizing service animals. My mind immediately went to all the things that I know Valor has done for his trainer in catching criminals and even saving his life. After writing the song, we realized that it could go far beyond service animals and even recognize humans that serve our country to keep us safe. I hope this song will bring much gratefulness for all animals and humans that serve us and keep us ALL safe.
